10 Most Common Installation Mistakes in Marietta Roofing

1. Leaving out the starter strip. The starter strips are special shingles or regular shingle placed upside down as a border around the perimeter edge off the roof. Some Marietta roof contractors will skip this step to save time and money.

2. Roofing Shingles aren’t kept aligned. Inexperienced or uncaring roof installers make this mistake often. Misalignment is obvious and looks terrible. Three tab or architectural shingles are built to be aligned easily. This mistake is hard to make an excuse for. A good Marietta GA roofer will not make this mistake.

3. Shingles don’t overhang the eaves. Proper roofing installation has the shingles hangover the sides and bottom of the roof by a couple of inches. This prevents water from getting under the roofing shingles along the edges and soaking into the decking and fascia.

4. Incorrect nailing of roof shingles. All shingles have a correct way to nail. Three tab and architectural shingle have a rubber strip across the center that prevents leaking around the nail. Any puncture of the shingles below this nail strip will lead to leaking immediately.

5. Reuse of flashing around chimneys and soil stack. Anytime the roof is being replaced or damaged has occurred to the flashing, it needs to be replaced. The metal isn’t that expensive. Don’t cut corners here and especially don’t let a Marietta roofer talk you out of replacing the flashing.

6. Do not use tar. It is a common misconception that tar is used to seal leak prone areas or loose shingles. Use proper sealants and cements for these tasks and don’t let a roofer use on your roof either.

7. Hip and ridge shingle not straight. Making the shingles across a hip or ridge is a more difficult task but any experienced roofer should be able to do this with no issue.

8. Speed nailing. Now this issue happens all the time and never gets brought up. Most three tab and architectural shingles only require 3 nails per shingle but recommend 4. Always demand a roofer use 4 nail per shingle. Nails are cheap.

9. No ice shield, water shield, or felt used. Felt, a layer of water resistant material that is installed first on the decking before shingles are placed should always be used. Same goes for the water shield in the valleys. If you live in the north, then ice shield is a most have as well.

10. Roofing shingles on a low pitch roof. Any roof lower than a 3/12 (3” rise for every 12” run) should not be shingled but have metal installed instead. The purpose of the roof is to remove water quickly. The rough surface of the shingles slows the water running down too much on low slope roofs.
