Water Shield, Felt, Drip Edge First
Once the old roof has been removed to the decking, the first thing a Marietta roofer should install is the water/ice shield along the bottom edges and in the valleys. This water proof barrier helps prevent water from soaking into the decking in area where water accumulation is the greatest.
Then a layer of felt will cover the entire roof. The thickness is rated in pounds. 15 pound is the minimum that should be installed. Still, 20 to 30 pound is better and highly recommended. The felt should over lap by three inches with nail at the top and bottom of the sheet in an overlapping pattern.
Drip edge is next and it is installed along the edges of the roof starting at the eaves and up the rakes. Drip edge is to overlap 2 to 3 inches.
Shingles Next Starting at the Eaves
Now the roofing shingles can start going down. A starter course is placed first. Now some roofing manufacturers make specific starter shingles while some Marietta roofing contractors cut the tabs off a three tab roofing shingle. Either way is fine. Like the drip edge, starter shingles are installed around the perimeter.
The first row of unaltered asphalt shingles is now installed along the bottom edge overhanging the edge and drip edge. Each row of roof shingles above the first course should be offset per the type of asphalt shingle as directed on the package. 4 nails should be used for each shingle. Some Marietta roofing contractors will use chalk lines to keep things straight and square.
Shingles at the valleys should cross the over the corner while the top shingle is cut to match the corner. There should be no nails within 6 inches of the valley. Hip caps are next. Again, some manufacturers make these specifically or Marietta roofing company use the three tabs and cut into individual tabs. With anything on the roof, start at the bottom and work up.
Ridge Vents are Last
Ridge shingles are added the same way. At this point, some Marietta roofers prefer to install ridge vents over the standard box vents. The new roof is done by this point and the Marietta roof contractor should clean up any mess made.
